You can expect a lot of lingering, pseudo-erotic glances at the female form, even if it is decked out in full welding gear. Remember, Adrian Lyne directed this film, the same guy that brought the world 9 1/2 Weeks, Indecent Proposal, Fatal Attraction and Unfaithful. They pad the rest of the movie with a lot of longing, a lot of dancing and tons of close-ups of Jennifer Beals' sweaty torso. She has to go through the required pitfalls and romantic potholes, but in the end, she gets to have her art and keep her clothes on.

Jennifer Beals' Alex Owens is a talented dancer just looking for her break. Remember Fame, Vision Quest, Quicksilver? Flashdance fits into that mold. What is left after the nostalgia? A pretty standard little-engine-that-could story, one of many that came out of the Eighties. Still, we're happy the cultural phenomenon has been DVD'ed. Although the back of the box says "Special Features Not Rated," there are none to be found, unless you consider Widescreen and Dolby Digital special. Fans on the film will be delighted, until they realize that the disc contains the movie and the movie alone. The film, of course, is Flashdance, and it's finally out on DVD. It took the fitness look that Olivia Newton-John started with "Let's Get Physical" and pushed it over the top. It co-conspired with Fame to make hordes of women don wooly legwarmers and prance about town with ripped sweatshirts hanging off one shoulder. This unassuming (well, maybe a little assuming) steel worker split her time between the mill and the local nudie (well, almost nudie) bar, expressing herself and trying to make it all the way to the Pittsburgh Conservatory of Music. Long before Showgirls' Naomi danced at the Cheetah, there was another exotic dancer who yearned to make it big: Alex Owens.
